Michael Carrick (born 28 July 1981 in Wallsend, England) is an English professional football manager and former player. He is currently the head coach of Middlesbrough, having been appointed in October 2022.
Early Life and Playing Beginnings
Carrick grew up in the footballing hotbed of Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne, and was a product of the famous Wallsend Boys Club, which has produced numerous professional footballers. His talent as a midfielder was evident from an early age, and he joined West Ham United’s academy in 1997.
Club Career
Carrick made his senior debut for West Ham in 1999 and soon established himself as a composed and intelligent central midfielder. He played over 150 games for the Hammers before moving to Tottenham Hotspur in 2004, where his performances over two seasons elevated his reputation.
In 2006, Carrick secured a transfer to Manchester United for a fee reported around £18 million. At Old Trafford, he became a central figure in Sir Alex Ferguson’s midfield for over a decade. Renowned for his passing range, positional intelligence, and calmness under pressure, Carrick played more than 450 matches for United in all competitions.
During his time at United, Carrick won five Premier League titles (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013), the FA Cup (2016), two League Cups (2009, 2010), the UEFA Champions League (2008), the Europa League (2017), and the FIFA Club World Cup (2008). His understated but crucial role in midfield earned him praise from teammates and managers, with many regarding him as one of the most intelligent English midfielders of his generation. He retired from playing in 2018.
International Career
Carrick represented England at youth levels before earning 34 senior caps between 2001 and 2015. Competing for a place in midfield with players like Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and Paul Scholes limited his international opportunities, but he was selected for major tournaments, including the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cups.
Coaching Career
After retiring, Carrick immediately joined Manchester United’s backroom staff, working under managers José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and briefly Ralf Rangnick. In November 2021, after Solskjær’s departure, Carrick served as caretaker manager, guiding the team to an unbeaten run in his three games in charge before stepping aside.
In October 2022, Carrick was appointed manager of Middlesbrough in the EFL Championship. Under his leadership, Boro enjoyed a strong resurgence, with Carrick praised for implementing a possession-based, tactically astute style of play. His work has quickly established him as one of the most promising young English managers.
Legacy
As a player, Carrick is remembered as one of Manchester United’s most reliable and tactically intelligent midfielders, valued for his leadership and technical ability rather than flashy moments. As a coach, he has already made strides in building his managerial reputation, with potential for higher-profile roles in the future.
