Richard Wright (born 5 November 1977 in Ipswich, England) is an English former professional footballer and current coach, best known for his career as a goalkeeper. He is currently part of the coaching staff at Manchester City, serving as a first-team goalkeeping coach.

Early Career and Ipswich Town

Wright joined Ipswich Town’s youth system as a schoolboy and progressed rapidly through the ranks. He made his senior debut in 1995 at the age of 17. Over the following six seasons, Wright became Ipswich’s first-choice goalkeeper, making more than 230 appearances in all competitions. He played a pivotal role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League in 2000 via the play-offs, where Ipswich defeated Barnsley 4–2 at Wembley. In their return to the top flight, Wright impressed, particularly during the 2000–01 season when Ipswich finished 5th, earning qualification for the UEFA Cup.

Arsenal

In July 2001, Wright secured a high-profile move to Arsenal for a fee of around £2 million. He was signed as competition for David Seaman but struggled to secure the No.1 role. Wright made 12 league appearances during the 2001–02 campaign as Arsenal achieved a domestic double, winning both the Premier League and the FA Cup. However, inconsistent performances limited his long-term impact at the club.

Everton and Later Clubs

Wright transferred to Everton in 2002, where he enjoyed a longer spell, making over 60 appearances during his time at Goodison Park. He was Everton’s first-choice keeper in spells but also battled with injuries and competition for the starting role.

He went on to represent several other clubs, including West Ham United, Southampton (loan), Sheffield United, and Preston North End, mostly serving as an experienced squad goalkeeper.

Manchester City

In 2012, Wright joined Manchester City on a free transfer. Although he did not make a first-team appearance during his four years at the club, he was highly valued as a senior professional within the squad, known for his influence in training, mentoring younger players, and contributing to squad morale. Wright officially retired from playing in 2016 while at City.

International Career

At youth level, Wright earned caps for England’s Under-18s and was a regular for the Under-21s, making 16 appearances. He went on to win two senior caps for England, making his debut in a friendly against Malta in June 2000. He was also included in England’s squad for UEFA Euro 2000 and the 2002 FIFA World Cup, though he did not feature in tournament matches.

Coaching Career

Following his retirement, Wright transitioned into coaching and was appointed as a goalkeeping coach at Manchester City. Working under managers Manuel Pellegrini and later Pep Guardiola, he has been part of the coaching team during City’s most successful era, contributing to multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, EFL Cups, and the 2023 UEFA Champions League triumph.
